Miss World Canada 2013 Delegate Yasaman Madanikia interview for Simply the Best - The Luisa Marshall Show.

Yasaman Madanikia.

On Spotlight: Miss World Canada 2013 Delegate Yasaman Madanikia and her stand for raising awareness on the consequences of homophobic bullying. We feature her unique talent entry on the Miss World Canada stage where she pays tribute to Jamey Rodemeyer who at the age of 14, committed suicide as a result of the bullying he faced as being openly bisexual. During the Miss World Canada 2013 talent competition she painted Jamey’s portrait to Sacha Sacket’s tune “Song for Jamey”. We ask her what inspired her to take this stance and what she hopes will happen as a result of it.

Special Thanks:

A special thanks to singer-songwriter Sacha Sacket for granting us permission to use his incredible heartwrenching song “Song for Jamey” so that we could feature Yasaman Madanikia’s powerful and inspiring stance during the Miss World Canada 2013 competition. After discovering the tragic story of Jamey Rodemeyer, Sacha, who was also a victim of severe bullying in high school, wrote “Song for Jamey” for the late teen.

Words from Luisa

We are still celebrating Philippine Independence Day in Metro Vancouver. It’s the busiest weekend for Filipinos all over the world, bringing unity and solidarity in their ever growing communities. We’re happy to join 2 major festivals, Surrey Philippine Independence Day Society annual Santacruzan and Metro Vancouver Philippine Arts and Culture Exposition Society’s Philippine Days Festival with special Kamilya Guest star John Lloyd Cruz.

John Lloyd Cruz sings at the Philippine Independence Day Festival in North Vancouver 2013.

North Vancouver Philippine Independence Day

Thousands of people flocked to the Metro Vancouver Philippine Arts and Culture Exposition Society festivities in North Vancouver on June 8th and 9th at the Waterfront Park, North Vancouver. This festival is dedicated to the Filipino Workers in British Columbia. Congratulations to Kuya Alvin and his team for a successful event featuring Kapamilya Philippine actor John Lloyd Cruz and my favorite comedian hosts Pork and Bean.

The most historic moment… after North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto declared June 9th as Philippine Day, he gave the key to the city as an approval, granting the establishment of the first Filipino Community Centre to Kuya Alvin and his committee. And a moving and powerful speech appealing to all Filipinos in British Columbia by the President of Barangay North Vancouver’s Filipino Community Centre, Kuya Alvin.

While covering the Miss World Canada 2013 competition, the Luisa Marshall Team and myself were truly inspired by one particular delegate. During preliminaries, Yasaman Madanikia, chose to use her time on the stage during the talent competition not only to showcase her artistic ability but to also stand up and raise awareness on the consequences of homophobic bullying. She painted a portrait of Jamey Rodemeyer, who at the age of 14 committed suicide after being bullied because of being bisexual. Painting along to Sacha Sacket’s heart wrenching song “Song for Jamey” (which Sacha wrote for the late teen).

“Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.” – John Quincy Adams
