GET INVOLVED! Filipino Community Roundtable with MP Salma Zahid (Dec. 27th, 2019 – Chuck Bailey Rec. Centre).
Pakistani Canadian MP Salma Zahid (Scarborough Centre, Ontario) authored to designate the month of June as Filipino Heritage Month across Canada, which was unanimously passed by the House of Commons of Canada on October 30, 2018. Salma was also a longtime spokesperson for racialized women and an advocate for Filipino caregivers family reunification program.
The Roundtable was hosted by long-time Surrey-based non-profit Surrey Philippine Independence Day Society (SPIDS) awarded recently as “2019 Most Influential Filipino Community Organization” in Canada. SPIDS gathered the highest number of signed petitions across Canada to pass Motion 155 facilitated by Surrey Centre MP Randeep Sarai.
We’re happy to share some important highlights of the Roundtable with MP Salma Zahid, MP Randeep Sarai, SPIDS and other community leaders. Discussions on issues on the Caregiver’s English Language requirements, division in the community and Filipino Canadian organizations with questionable motives, exploitation of Canadian employers to Filipino migrant workers.
“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”
