The Filipino Canadian community welcomes Miguel at the Philippine Cultural Celebration in Richmond, BC. Watch highlights of our special interview with Miguel. He talks about his inspirations, his sentiments and his next novel.
On Spotlight: The Luisa Marshall Band featuring Naomi Chan.
“I think we should take for granted the fact that our culture is extremely rich and diverse and inclusive intolerance. I think we should get over a lot of the bad habits that we have and look out into the world and be part of the world. We, Filipinos, are blessed being everywhere, with speaking many languages, with being good at many skills, with being extremely hardworking and respected all over the world. And if we can interact more with the world and learn from other cultures and be proud really of who we are, rather than be ashamed and that we have to hide within our community or criticize each other for going out into the world.”
– Miguel Syjuco
Words from Luisa:
I met Miguel at the Philippine Cultural Celebration in Richmond, British Columbia, where his novel Ilustrado was relaunched. It was a very successful event held at the Richmond Public Library in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate. Miguel Syjuco received the 2008 Man Asia Literary Prize and the 2008 Palanca Awards Grand Prize for his novel Ilustrado which has been translated into fifteen languages.
Also on the show is one of my favorite singers Naomi Chan. When I invited Naomi to join my band, she didn’t hesitate a bit and together we formed a fantastic team to entertain people of all ages. This cover band is versatile, fun and very, very entertaining. Come and join us at the Lion’s Den, Boulevard Casino, Coquitlam, on Saturday, March 16th (one night only).
I will be performing my Tina Turner Tribute tomorrow, Saturday night, at the Florence Filberg Centre, Comox Valley, Vancouver Island, to honor the winners of the Top 20 under 40 in Business and Community Achievement Awards. I am so proud to be invited and be a part of this meaningful event.
Have a supah great weekend to all of you!
