Celebrating Filipino Arts, Culture and Tradition with the Surrey Philippine Independence Day Society (SPIDS) putting the month of June in motion.

A happy celebration of the 121st Philippine Independence Day and the 1st Filipino Heritage Month with a Santacruzan Parade led by Zenia Marshall as Reyna Elena, Original Pilipino Music, Folk Dances and of course Free Food Tasting at the Bridgeview Park Centre.

Santacruzan, (from the Spanish santa cruz meaning “holy cross”) is the ritual pageant held on the last day of the Flores de Mayo. It honours the finding of the True Cross by Helena of Constantinople (known as Reyna Elena) and Constantine the Great.

The city of Surrey recognized SPIDS for their 11th year of non-stop community work, raising awareness, getting involved, undying advocacies and volunteerism. Community leader Narima Dela Cruz was awarded by the Filipino Champions of Canada “Filipino Champion of the Year” 2019.

Filipinos all over Canada have a reason to celebrate the whole month of June. On October 30th, the House of Commons unanimously passed Motion 155, officially designating the month of June as Filipino Heritage Month across Canada. SPIDS gathered the highest number of signed petitions across Canada to make it happen. We are happy to feature the pride and passion of this small group of people that made a difference to all Filipino Canadians.

A number of dignitaries were present at the event, such as B.C. Minister of Jobs, Trade & Technology Bruce Ralston, MLA Harry Bains (Surrey-Newton), Philippine Consul General Andrelita Austria, to name a few, at the opening ceremony, beloved Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum pointed out that the city of Surrey is thriving due to the continued leadership of SPIDS in promoting Filipino arts and culture. He also raved and solely recognized the effort, commitment of Narima Dela Cruz and SPIDS volunteers regarding their hard work on gathering the highest number of signed petitions all over Canada in support of Motion 155 declaring the month of June as Filipino Heritage Month.
