- Angat Pinoy 2014 Highlights
- Proud to be Filipino Interviews
We’ll take you to the biggest Philippine Independence Day celebration in Metro Vancouver… where we asked Filipino Canadians about how proud they are to be Filipino in this beautiful country, O Canada! Angat Pinoy 2014 Philippine Days Festival organized by Metro Vancouver – Philippine Arts and Culture Exposition Society (MV-PACES) at the Waterfront Park in North Vancouver was very successful despite the changing weather conditions. On the show we feature the events highlights and challenges.
Many Filipinos flocked to the Waterfront Park festival grounds after the heavy downpour. With their umbrellas and raincoats. Wet or dry, the people’s smiles and spirit warmed up the whole event.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MV-PACES & BARANGAY NORTH VAN! Angat Pinoy, 2014 Philippine Days Festival at the Waterfront Park, North Vancouver last Sat. & Sun. June 14th and 15th proudly showcased the Filipino culture beautifully integrated with Canadian flare. The 2 day festival was almost ruined by the bad weather but the spirit of the organizers and volunteers was strong and optimistic.
DAY 2, Sunday was the main day! People still came despite weather forecast warnings. Earlier that day, the event started at the city hall with the flag raising. Then the rain poured just right before the opening ceremonies at the Waterfront Park. The moment it stopped the organizers proceeded calmly and started the program. Many VIP’s, city officials, various leaders from associations and societies came for the opening ceremony where yours truly was invited to perform the patriotic song “AKO AY PILIPINO” segued to the Philippine and Canadian National Anthems. People were surprised that I could actually sing a Tagalog song. Thanks to Kuya Alvin Koh Relleve for inviting me and reminding me I could! Speeches followed and the cultural entertainment started with TINIKLING (Bamboo Dance) while I started interviewing people who dropped by our Simply The Best, The Luisa Marshall Show booth.
Sunday was the worst nightmare of any event planner! The weather flip flopped so much from rainy to sunny then it really poured like crazy and expected thunderstorm roared at around 3PM for about 20 minutes or more. Entertainment stopped to wait for clearer and safer conditions. Hundreds of people took cover under the tents and some walked a block to the Quay Market. We expected rain but Steve and I, our daughters Kimi and Zenia never expected that kind of downpour.
We remained hopeful that the rain would stop soon as we invited a few people to stay dry inside our tent. The kicker was… a lot of fans of Filipino teleserye actor Ser Chief Richard Yap didn’t care about the weather at all. It’s funny that when I asked people why they’re proud to be Filipinos… their response was “Filipinos are resilient”. That afternoon it just proved that! Unbelievable! Minutes after the weather cleared up, hundreds of Filipinos were back on the festival grounds to cheer, sing and laugh with their idol like nothing happened. I was totally SPEECHLESS watching from our booth. Then the sun came out shining like a HERO to save the day! AMAZING! This moment was something to talk about for many, many years to come. I was glad my daughters witnessed how we Filipinos couldn’t be stopped by any storm to continue the celebration.
MV-PACES! You rocked! Kuya Alvin Koh Relleve and the rest of the staff handled the circumstances and challenges with their beautiful spirit and a calm positive attitude I haven’t seen in a long, long time. True leaders that displayed true leadership is the key to this community.
